Santiago Route of A Ameixenda

Cee

Find out more about Santiago Route of A Ameixenda

The Santiago Route of A Ameixenda is a short but highly symbolic trail that brings to life the legend of Apostle Saint James’ passage through this small village in the municipality of Cee. Stretching only 741 meters, the linear route connects key historical sites, from the Portela do Caniso to the parish church, offering a blend of history, spirituality and rural landscape.

According to local lore, Saint James arrived at O Caniso pursuing pagans, ultimately engaging in battle at Petón do Campo. This tale was immortalized by local poet Xoaquina Outes. The route concludes at the Church of Santiago de A Ameixenda, home to a rare relic: the Apostle’s pinky finger, one of the few outside the Cathedral of Santiago.

This self-guided route takes about 15 minutes and is easily accessible. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to the rural terrain. Nearby, visitors can also explore scenic spots like the A Ameixenda Viewpoint, Caneliñas Beach, and the historic Castelo do Príncipe—making this a truly immersive experience into the legends and heritage of Costa da Morte.
