Costa da Morte, sustainable tourist destination

Discover the rivers and estuaries of the Costa da Morte

The estuaries and rivers are a fundamental element in the Costa da Morte. Not only have they shaped its peculiar orography but they have also shaped the lives and customs of the people who live in this paradise. The force of the rivers has been used to move mills and fulling mills, the estuaries to form sheltered communities and feed on their infinite abundance.

Here you can learn more about the three estuaries and their rivers that Costa da Morte has, as well as their history and everything they can offer you today.

Rivers and estuaries

One of the best known features of the Costa da Morte are its estuaries. But do you know what a estuary is?

Rivers and estuaries

Estuaries are geomorphological formations that arise from the maritime flooding of a river valley. This occurred at the end of the last ice age when the sea level rose, leading to these floods that give rise to unique aquatic spaces surrounded by mountains and vegetation and whose biodiversity is fostered by the mixture of salt and fresh water and the shelter of open sea currents.

Rivers and estuaries

The geography of the estuaries is also peculiar, always having two villages at its ends and one located at its apex through which we will have to travel to pass from one side of the estuary to the other.

Rivers and estuaries

And between both extremes there are magical places such as beaches and coves with calm waters where you can cool off and spend a day in the company of family and friends.
