The "Castros" in A Costa da Morte

An example of what you could find are the Castros. These were fortified settlements from the Bronze Age (3,300 B.C. to 1,200 B.C.), the Iron Age (750 B.C. to 100 B.C.) and even came to coexist with the time of the Roman Empire (47 B.C. to 476). In them there were walls, moats or parapets that bordered the town in its entirety, a defensive element that added to its location in elevated areas or on peninsulas.

Castro de Borneiro

Another characteristic of the Castros was their circular shape, both in their defensive elements and in the houses themselves, which meant that there were no streets with right angles.

On the Costa da Morte you can visit some Castros such as Castro A Cibdá de Borneiro, others still require previous work to be able to be visited completely, but it is also known of the existence of many that have not yet been located. Who knows what you can find on the Costa da Morte.

Petroglyphs on the Costa da Morte

Another example of what you could find walking along the Costa da Morte are the petroglyphs, a type of rock art that emerged in the Neolithic (from the third millennium BC to the first millennium BC) and that consists of engraving different motifs in stone. Some of them are simple with geometric shapes and others have more complex elements such as a snake. All of them have a meaning, some of them known and others in which there are still doubts. Do you think you could discover its secrets?

Dolmens in A Costa da Morte

However, the most emblematic figure of the millenary past of the Costa da Morte that you can find are the Dolmens. These works of prehistoric engineering consisted of the superposition of large megaliths, some of them exceeding 7 tons, for the construction of chambers that were used for ritual and funerary purposes.

Discover the Megalithic Costa da Morte

All of them make up the imprint of a thousand-year-old Costa da Morte that is still alive and some of it that is still waiting to be discovered.
