The Costa da Morte Tourism Association (CMAT) has announced that Xosé Ameixeiras, head of La Voz de Galicia in Carballo, will receive the title of “Costa da Morte Ambassador 2026”, in recognition of a professional career dedicated to giving the region a voice and visibility through the press and the media.
The award will be presented on Tuesday 17 November, during the sixth Costa da Morte Tourism Meeting at the Parador Costa da Morte (Muxía), an annual event bringing together tourism professionals and institutional representatives to discuss the sector’s challenges and opportunities. The award recognises people who, through their work in different fields, help raise the profile of the Costa da Morte and promote its identity both within Galicia and beyond.
A career dedicated to giving the Costa da Morte a voice
Xosé Ameixeiras has worked for La Voz de Galicia for more than forty years, first as a correspondent from Salto-Vimianzo, his home parish, and later as a journalist and head of the Carballo edition. Throughout his career, the Costa da Morte, its people, its heritage and its needs have remained central to his work, helping to ensure that the region and its realities have a constant presence in the media.
His vision of the Costa da Morte is also shaped by his advocacy for unity and cooperation between municipalities as a means of advancing the region’s development, as well as his support for initiatives and services spanning several municipalities. He has repeatedly stressed the importance of cooperation and tourism planning that goes beyond administrative boundaries.
Giving a voice to the people of the Costa da Morte has also been a fundamental part of his work. Over the years, he launched features such as Persoas con historia, in which hundreds of local residents shared their experiences and helped preserve the memory of life in the region. This was later followed by Lobos de Mar, focusing on seafaring communities, and more recently A canteira do talento, which highlights young people from the Costa da Morte who are building successful projects and careers while remaining in rural communities.
His commitment to culture and heritage has likewise been a constant throughout his career. He has helped raise awareness of figures such as Man de Camelle and supported the recovery of the Dombate dolmen, while also placing the Costa da Morte’s heritage at the heart of news coverage. In promoting the region, his involvement with the Vákner Awards and his work to publicise the Fisterra and Muxía routes of the Camino de Santiago are also noteworthy.
In recognition of this career, the Board of Directors of the Costa da Morte Tourism Association (CMAT) chose Xosé Ameixeiras as the fourth Costa da Morte Ambassador for 2026, highlighting not only his work as a journalist but also his deep ties to the region and his sustained contribution to making its people, culture, heritage and challenges more visible.
His ability to engage in dialogue and understand different perspectives, together with the respect he has earned over decades among people of differing political and social views, complete the picture of someone who has spent more than forty years telling the story of the Costa da Morte and helping the region gain recognition beyond its borders.
