A Coruña Provincial Council and CMAT, the Costa da Morte tourism association, have met to assess the current status of the Costa da Morte Megalithic Park. Led by the Council’s Heritage Department, the initiative aims to highlight the region’s megalithic legacy while exploring its future role in local cultural tourism.
Reviewing progress and the work ahead
The meeting was attended by Xosé Penas, the Provincial Council’s heritage representative; José Manuel López Varela, president of CMAT and mayor of A Laracha; and María Lema Santabaya, a councillor in Dumbría and CMAT board member. They discussed the progress made so far and the steps still required to move the project forward.
The Provincial Council reported that it has signed an agreement with Estudo Técnico Galego to carry out the necessary land expropriation procedures. Work is also beginning on signage to identify heritage features and help prepare for the organisation of visits at a later stage.
Connecting heritage with the region’s tourism future
The participants recognised the archaeological and cultural importance of the park, alongside its potential to broaden Costa da Morte’s tourism offer. Once developed, the visitor experience could make the region’s megalithic heritage more accessible and support activity in the municipalities involved.
Both organisations emphasised the need for continued cooperation between public authorities and the local tourism sector. The meeting provided an opportunity to share information, identify outstanding needs and reinforce the collaboration required for the project’s next stages.
