Find out more about San Martiño de Duio Church (Fisterra)

San Martiño de Duio Church reveals a side of the municipality of Fisterra often overlooked by visitors heading straight for the harbour or the lighthouse. Set in the rural surroundings of Duio, this Baroque-style parish church has its origins in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its most distinctive external feature is the five-sided outline of the façade, with a granite statue of Saint Martin above the entrance. That sculpture is an ideal starting point for appreciating the character of a modest but memorable building.

The church has a single-nave hall plan leading towards the chancel, with a sacristy attached to its northern side. This arrangement reflects the purpose of a rural parish church, built around the needs of its community rather than the grandeur of a major pilgrimage sanctuary. San Martiño also holds a notable episode in local history: according to Fisterra’s municipal heritage information, French troops desecrated the church during the Peninsular War.

Visiting San Martiño de Duio offers a different perspective on Fisterra, one shaped by villages, parish life and roads that existed long before the cape became a famous tourist destination. Step back to take in the geometric façade and look for the carved figure of the patron saint above the door. It is a worthwhile heritage stop for travellers interested in quieter corners of the Costa da Morte, where religious buildings remain woven into the everyday landscape.
