Find out more about Church of Saint John the Baptist in Carballo
The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Carballo is a key reference point for understanding the town’s religious heritage and the role of the parish as a community hub. In 1974, the decision was made to build a new church and demolish the previous one, even though restoration was possible, since the original building used high-quality stone masonry.
The plans for this third temple were drawn up by Carballo architect José Manuel Rey Pichel. The result was not simply a church building, but a parish complex with several facilities, built in concrete, with a strong, practical design shaped around parish life and everyday use.
Even so, the story of the earlier church remains present through meaningful details: the bells, various devotional images, and liturgical objects were preserved. In the churchyard, you can also see a cruceiro (Galician stone cross) from 1811, moved from Cernide, where the former parish church once stood—an authentic historical marker that adds depth to any visit to this landmark in Carballo.
