Interview with Mónica Rodríguez Ordóñez, Mayoress of Vimianzo

Entrevista a Mónica Rodríguez Ordóñez

We continue with the interviews to the city councils with the City Council of Vimianzo. The municipality of Vimianzo is the natural capital of Terra de Soneira. It is part of the so-called Costa da Morte and borders the municipalities of Laxe, Camariñas, Muxía, Dumbría and Zas. On the southeast side it limits with the Encoro da Fervenza, which separates it from the municipality of Mazaricos.

Vimianzo has within its historical heritage an important number of churches, buildings, etc. that reflect different architectural styles. It also has an important historical legacy; it is a town council where you can appreciate the evolution of human civilization from the Castrexa Age to the present: dolmens, mámoas, petróglifos, castros, samples of the Romanesque and Renaissance, civil and religious architecture, converge in the diversity of the soneirás lands.

Today we show you the town hall from the point of view of Mónica Rodríguez Ordóñez, Mayoress of Vimianzo. We leave you the best answers:

What feelings does Costa da Morte awaken for you? What does it mean to you?

It inspires me nature and culture next to the wild Atlantic, a connection with the entire west coast of Europe. It is the land of the sunset, with its wild and mysterious side.

Three reasons to discover it

  • Its Atlantic landscape, with cliffs, open sea beaches, estuaries, trails and a multitude of balconies at sunset. The extension of the Way to Fisterra and Muxía arrives here, which, surely, has its origin in seeing that end of the world.
  • The cultural heritage, which allows a journey through the history of Galician humanity, from the time of the dolmens to the present, through forts and castles. For its interpretation, several museums and centers scattered throughout the seventeen municipalities of the geodestination open their doors: Dolmen of Dombate, Torres do Allo, Batáns de Mosquetín, Castelo de Vimianzo, Casa do Oleiro in Buño, Museum of Carballo, Museum of the Sea of Fisterra…
  • Its people, hospitable and bearers of knowledge as the handicrafts that can be seen in the Castelo de Vimianzo.

What time of the year do you like Costa da Morte the most and why?

Spring and, above all, summer have their attraction for the multitude of celebrations, for the hours of light and for the temperature, which allow us to enjoy this land. We are fortunate that it is not yet overcrowded. During these seasons there are many sports, cultural and gastronomic activities.

Autumn and winter follow, with the fall of the leaves, their colors and fruits. It is a good time for hiking, collecting chestnuts, picking mushrooms, walking near the sea or sharing a good lunch. Even when there are strong storms, it is a spectacle to see the raging sea from a safe place.

For tourists who come to visit you outside the summer season, what experiences are not to be missed?

  • A walk along one of our beaches
  • A sunset
  • A hiking trail
  • A visit to a museum or interpretation center
  • A good meal with the products of the sea and the land.

Besides Vimianzo Castle, what other places or experiences are not to be missed?

  • Batáns do Mosquetín
  • Interpretative path of Cereixo
  • Route of Penedos de Pasarela e Traba
  • Route of the Dolmens
  • Route through the Val de Vimianzo
  • Roteiro Fidalgo
  • Via Maríana and visit to Orbellido, near the Fervenza reservoir
  • A chocolate with churros on the day of the flea market, every Thursday in Vimianzo
  • Cultural and sports program of the municipality and activities of various groups.

Galicia in general, and Costa da Morte in particular, are synonymous with good food, any recommendations of typical dishes to discover Vimianzo through the palate?

Vimianzo is a reference in the gastronomic map of Costa da Morte for the abundance of establishments, for their good work and for the variety that can be found in their menus, ranging from vegetables to meats, through fish and seafood, products that are prepared with traditional recipes or incorporating the latest trends in the kitchen.

Grilled meats occupy a prominent place in the offer and the menu of the day was not forgotten by our restaurateurs and workers in the area know that they have a wide range of dishes for a reasonable price.

Empanadas de bacalao, caldeiradas de pescados, stews, stews, broth, bollos del chichón, callos complete this offer that extends to the pinchos of the bars.

It is necessary to emphasize the alliance of the food industry with this gastronomic offer, coming from the bakeries and the meat factories.

Another aspect related to good food is the recreational aspect and, in recent years, the Pinchos Irmandiños, which precede the Alsalto Festival, have been a great success. The Faguía de Carnés, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Galicia, is characterized by the tasting of tripe prepared by the locals.

What do the visitors tell you? What do they love most about their stay in Vimianzo and the Costa da Morte?

They value very positively the interpretative spaces of the Castelo and the Batáns and also the guided and dramatized visits that are organized.

What are your three favorite beaches in Costa da Morte? Why those? And for surf lovers and other nautical-sports activities?

  • Traba beach, for its wild character and for being part of the route of the Camino dos Faros that joins Camelle in a beautiful route of rocks and cliffs.
  • The beach of Ariño, for being of estuary and a place with trees and picnic area, very comfortable to spend a day with the family.
  • The Rostro beach, a sandy area that connects us with the Atlantic Ocean and with a sunset that has a special sound.

For those who love hiking… Which one do you recommend in your municipality? And which is your favorite in Costa da Morte?

The route of the Penedos de Traba e Pasarela is a great option.

The city council organizes several guided routes throughout the year that are very successful. There are also other possibilities:

  • The Caminno dos Faros, which runs along the coast and passes through Vimianzo between Traba and Camelle and in Cereixo.
The Via Mariana, which connects Braga with Muxía and crosses the parishes of Baíñas and Berdoias, and is complemented by the route next to the encoro and the vieiro Fidalgo.

What place do you think is the great unknown in Costa da Morte but has a great interest or potential?

The sea of ardora, the observation of the stars and the sunsets.

Where do you find the best sunset?

In Vimianzo there are several places, one of them is the Alto de San Bartolo, very close to the capital of the municipality.
