Interview with Alfredo Cañizo, Councilor for Tourism of Malpica de Bergantiños

Entrevista a Alfredo Cañizo

We continue with the interviews to the town councils with the Town Council of Malpica de Bergantiños. Malpica is one of the whaling ports that existed on the coast of Galicia in the 17th century. History tells us that it was Basque sailors who founded this town, which was conceived as a base of operations for the fleet that captured cetaceans in this corner of the Atlantic.

Nowadays, Malpica de Bergantiños is one of the most important ports for small-scale fishing in Galicia. The main population centre is the municipal capital, which gives its name to the municipality, although we also have towns such as Buño, Seaia or Cerqueda where most of the inhabitants of the territory are grouped together.

Today we show you the town council from the point of view of Alfredo Cañizo, Councillor of Tourism. We leave you the best answers:

What feelings does Costa da Morte awake for you? What does it mean for you?

Costa da Morte is my life.

Three reasons to discover it

Culture, gastronomy and the warmth of the people.

What time of the year do you like Costa da Morte the most and why?

In winter because of the quality of life, it becomes a haven of inner peace for people.

For tourists who come to visit you outside the summer season, what experiences are not to be missed?

The must-visits are our culture and gastronomy, the routes such as O Camiño dos Faros and the Buño smellery.

Apart from the Punta Nariga lighthouse, what other places or experiences are not to be missed?

The Sisargas, the Buño smell shop, hiking routes and visits to the port or the fish market.

Galicia in general, and Costa da Morte in particular, are synonymous with good food, any recommendations of typical dishes to discover Malpica through the palate?

Caldeirada, octopus, empanadas, and everything that is caught in our sea. And of course the best meats.

What do the people who visit you tell you? What do they like most about their stay in Malpica and about the Costa da Morte?

That they like our familiarity, our coast, our gastronomy and that they will repeat without a doubt.

What are your three favourite beaches in Costa da Morte? Why those? And for surf lovers and other nautical-sports activities?

Area Maior, As Torradas and Seiruga, all in Malpica.

For those who love hiking… Which one do you recommend in your municipality? And which is your favourite one in Costa da Morte?

O Camiño dos Faros.

Which place do you think is the great unknown in Costa da Morte but has a great interest or potential?

The astronomical viewpoint of the Sea to the Stars in Punta Nariga.

Where do you find the best sunset?

At the Punta Nariga lighthouse.
