Interview with María Lago, Carnota Tourism Technician

Entrevista a María Lago

We continue with the interviews to the town councils with the town council of Carnota. Carnota is located at the western end of A Coruña, south of Fisterra, bordering the municipalities of Muros, Dumbría and Mazaricos.

The main protagonists of the municipality of Carnota in the landscape are, without a doubt, the granite rocks of Monte Pindo, which formed an incomparable natural space from the geomorphological point of view.

The traditional activities were, until not so long ago, fishing and agriculture, but they have been losing importance. Nowadays we can say that the richness of the coastline allows the business exploitation of the sea resources, a sector in which the turbot farms of Lira and Quilmas stand out.

Today we show you the town council from the point of view of María Lago, Tourism Technician. We leave you the best answers:

What feelings does Costa da Morte awaken in you and what does it mean to you?

Costa da Morte is that place that makes you feel free and want to come back.

Three reasons to discover it

  • The gastronomy of the Costa da Morte never disappoints, it offers a high quality product and a very good value for money.
  • The beaches of the Costa da Morte are also always a guarantee of success due to their fine white sand and the crystal clear waters of most of them.
  • The samples of the cultural heritage of the area such as the hórreos (granaries) or the water mills, but also the intangible heritage such as the festivals and traditions.

What time of the year do you like Costa da Morte the most and why?

Costa da Morte has a different charm at different times of the year. In summer the weather is good and the range of activities is wider and in winter the sea in this area has a special attraction during the storms. But perhaps the most beautiful time of the year is spring, when the gorse blossoms and the mountains are dyed yellow.

For tourists who come to visit outside the summer season, what experiences are not to be missed?

Visiting the hórreos of Carnota and Lira, the viewpoints of Louredo and Lira or the Pedrafigueira waterfall are visits that can be made at any time of the year. A walk along the Senda Verde (Green Path) is also always a good option, where you can also see various archaeological sites.

Apart from Carnota beach, what other places or experiences are not to be missed?

Climbing Mount Pindo is a very comforting experience. A place full of myths and legends where you can contemplate the different rock formations in human and animal shapes that were formed as a result of the erosion of the granite. The views from La Muela are fascinating and well worth the effort.

Craft enthusiasts can visit a pottery workshop that offers free guided tours with access to the exhibition and the artist’s studio, and for those who want a more active experience, they can enjoy a day’s fishing with an experienced local skipper.

Galicia in general, and Costa da Morte in particular, are synonymous with good food. Any recommendations of typical dishes to discover Carnota through the palate?

Without a doubt. I would recommend the seafood, especially octopus and shellfish, which are of excellent quality on our coast.

What do the people who visit you tell you? What do they like most about their stay in Carnota? And about Costa da Morte?

What they like most about Carnota is the landscape and they value very much the preservation of the practically virgin coastline, without big buildings on the beach. The gastronomy and the character of the people of the Costa da Morte are also highly valued.

What are your three favourite beaches in Costa da Morte? Why those? And for lovers of surfing and other water sports activities?

The beach of Carnota, a reference point on the Costa da Morte and in Galicia as a whole. A special place, with crystal-clear waters and kilometres of sand against the backdrop of Mount Pindo.

Lariño beach is one of my favourites because it is located in an idyllic setting without crowds, perfect for disconnecting. It is also frequented by experienced surfers and kitesurfers.

I also like Razo beach very much, it is a large beach that offers many services.

For those who love hiking… Which one do you recommend in your municipality and which is your favourite in Costa da Morte?

In Carnota I would recommend two in particular, the ascent to Monte Pindo and the Senda Verde. From the Costa da Morte, I think that the reference is the Way of the Lighthouses.

What place do you think is the great unknown in Costa da Morte but has a great interest or potential?

The area of Caneliñas, where the old whaler is located, both for its location and for the history behind it.

Where do we find the best sunset?

All along the Costa da Morte, you can enjoy film-like sunsets in many places. In Carnota I would highlight two locations in particular: a very popular place to see the sunset is behind the lighthouse of Lariño and the other place is the Monte Pindo where you can see the last sunset of Continental Europe between the 24th of March and the 23rd of April and between the 18th of August and the 19th of September.

Of the most recommended places to watch the sunset in the rest of the Costa da Morte, I would recommend the lighthouses of Fisterra and Touriñán.
