On Tuesday 29 September, Malpica de Bergantiños offers visitors the chance to discover one of the traditional crafts most closely linked to the maritime identity of the Costa da Morte: the work of the local net menders. The guided visit “Discovering the craft of the net menders in Malpica” is an authentic marine tourism experience focused on traditional fishing gear, inherited knowledge and the essential role these skilled professionals play in the fishing industry.
During the visit, participants will learn how fishing nets and other types of fishing gear are prepared, repaired and maintained, gaining insight into techniques and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Beyond the manual skills involved, the experience highlights the social, economic and cultural importance of the net menders and their close connection with everyday life in Malpica’s fishing port.
This is an opportunity to experience the destination from within and to understand why this traditional profession remains vital to both the fishing activity and the preservation of Galicia’s maritime heritage.
The activity is part of Mar e Rías: Pesca & Turismo, an initiative designed to help visitors discover the GALP Costa da Morte area through the sea, its people and its traditional professions. It is a distinctive way to experience Malpica through its maritime heritage and appreciate the expertise of the people who keep its seafaring culture alive.
