Centenary event of the Finisterre Association in America

Fisterra, always present in the memory of those who left. On 30 September 2026 at 7:00 pm, the Mercado Cultural de Fisterra hosts the centenary event of the Finisterre Association in America, a commemoration devoted to Fisterra’s history of emigration, the people who crossed the Atlantic and the historic ties that continue to connect Galicia and the Americas.

One hundred years ago, many men and women from Fisterra set out in search of a better future. They left behind their homes, families and homeland, but carried their identity across the ocean. In America they built families and communities while keeping the memory of Fisterra alive from one generation to the next.

This event revisits that history through a close, human perspective: the experience of those who emigrated, the families who remained in Galicia and a community that learned to recognise itself on both sides of the Atlantic.

Centenary event programme

• 7:00 pm. Institutional opening. Welcome and address by the Mayor of Fisterra, Luis Insua Lago, opening the event and highlighting the historical significance of the anniversary.
• The history of Fisterra and its Atlantic connections. An introduction to the historical context of migration and the links forged with America, presented by José Fernando Carrillo Ugarte.
• How did people live? What did they do? A session on social memory and everyday life, including customs, work, family relationships and the experiences of the generations involved, with Inmaculada Canosa and Juan Gabriel Satti Bouzas.
• Videoconference with Argentina. A meeting with representatives of the Galician community in Argentina, creating a space for dialogue and reconnection across the Atlantic.
• Institutional screening. Presentation of the video by the Mayor of Fisterra shown in Avellaneda.
• Artistic showcase and small painting exhibition. A cultural look at Avellaneda’s past through art and shared memory.

Fisterra, Galicia and America: a shared memory

The centenary is an opportunity to recognise the effort of those who left, understand the impact of emigration on Fisterra and celebrate ties that remain alive a century later.

Crossing an ocean may mean changing countries, but roots travel too. On 30 September, Fisterra reconnects with America through memory, identity and recognition of all those who helped build this shared history.
