Find out more about Sanctuary of Our Lady of Xunqueira – Cee

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Xunqueira, located in the town of Cee, is one of the most revered religious sites on the Costa da Morte. Its origin is linked to an old legend: foreign sailors, caught in a storm, discovered the image of the Virgin holding the Child among the reeds. Since then, the “Virgin of Xunqueira” or “the Appeared One” has become the spiritual protector of the village.

The current building was constructed during the 19th and 20th centuries on the remains of the old Church of Santa María de Cee, first documented in the 15th century, although its main chapel features elements from the 14th century. In April 1809, during the Peninsular War, Napoleonic troops set the church on fire, destroying many valuable artworks, including altarpieces by the famous Baroque architect Domingo de Andrade, a native of Cee.

Today, the Sanctuary of Xunqueira stands as both a religious site and a cultural-historical landmark. Its legend and enduring legacy make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the heritage and spirit of Costa da Morte.
