Find out more about Religious Events of the Patron Saint and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festivities in Fisterra

From 27 August to 8 September 2026, Fisterra hosts the religious programme of its Patron Saint and Our Lady of Mount Carmel festivities, one of the town’s most deeply rooted traditions. The parish of Santa María das Areas brings together a novena, solemn Masses and processions in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Roch and Santa María das Areas, the patron saint of Fisterra.

Novena to Santa María das Areas

From 27 August to 4 September, the novena in honour of Santa María das Areas will be held each evening. The programme begins at 7:30 pm with the rosary, followed by Mass at 8:00 pm. Each day will feature the participation of different parish brotherhoods, associations and local collaborators.

Saturday 5 September: Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The solemn celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel begins at 10:30 am with the departure from the church. At 11:30 am, a solemn Mass will be held at the fish market, followed by the traditional maritime procession, one of the most moving moments of Fisterra’s festivities and a powerful expression of the town’s bond with the sea.

Sunday 6 September: Saint Roch

At 12:00 noon, a solemn Mass will be celebrated in the parish church, followed by the procession in honour of Saint Roch.

Monday 7 September: eve of the patron saint’s day

At 8:00 pm, a solemn Mass for the faithful departed will mark the eve of the feast of Santa María das Areas.

Tuesday 8 September: Santa María das Areas

Fisterra’s main patron saint celebration begins at 11:00 am with a solemn Mass, followed by the procession.

Parish choirs

All religious events will be accompanied by the parish choirs Santa María das Areas and Virgen del Carmen de Fisterra, adding a strong community and traditional character to the celebrations.

This religious programme is an essential part of the 2026 Patron Saint and Our Lady of Mount Carmel festivities in Fisterra, offering residents, visitors and pilgrims an opportunity to experience one of the town’s most meaningful traditions.
