Find out more about San Andrés de Zas Church (Zas)

San Andrés de Zas Church, in the municipality of Zas, is one of the notable heritage landmarks of the inland Costa da Morte. Its tall, slender bell tower rises above the surrounding buildings, marking a church closely connected with one family’s history. The building was commissioned by Álvaro Núñez de Lamas, and its distinctive silhouette remains part of the parish landscape. From outside, take a moment to notice the differing volumes of the rectangular nave, the chancel and the tower.

Inside is an especially unusual feature: the sarcophagus of the founder’s mother. Its presence turns a visit into more than an appreciation of architecture. It speaks of family memory, patronage and the role played by local lineages in the religious buildings of the region. The church shows how a place of worship could also serve as a setting for remembrance and social identity, alongside the ordinary celebrations of parish life.

San Andrés is best approached with both stories in mind. Outside, the height of the bell tower and the contrast between the sections of the building reveal its architectural character; if the interior is open, the tomb adds a more personal dimension to that history. It is a rewarding stop on a heritage route through Zas, where parish churches, manor houses and former noble residences preserve interconnected stories.
