At Punta da Barca, where Muxía faces the Atlantic, a small white tower stands beside one of Galicia’s most evocative coastal sanctuaries. This is Punta da Barca Lighthouse, also called the Muxía beacon: a modest maritime landmark set against the powerful ocean and granite rocks of the Costa da Morte.
Built in 1926, the cylindrical beacon marks the southern side of the entrance to the Camariñas estuary. Its white light forms part of the maritime navigation network along this historically seafaring shore. Across the water, the more imposing Faro Vilán makes the view especially memorable.
Just a few steps away stands the Virxe da Barca Sanctuary, linked to the pilgrimage tradition and to the legends of Pedra de Abalar and Pedra dos Cadrís. Here, maritime history, religious heritage and a dramatic Atlantic landscape come together in a remarkable setting.
The beacon is easily reached on foot from the centre of Muxía towards the sanctuary. Stay on safe paths and enjoy the coastal views, but keep well clear of exposed rocks when waves are high: the sea at Punta da Barca demands respect.
