Suksen, a creation by Jandross Rodríguez, comes to Vimianzo as part of Residencias Paraíso 2026, Colectivo RPM’s programme supporting research and creation in dance and live arts. The work begins with an unusual question: what happens when mourning, wake traditions and rituals of farewell are revisited through a queer and contemporary perspective?
Drawing on the customs of keeping vigil and observing mourning, the project explores intimacy, exhaustion, resilience and the need for companionship through the body. With artistic direction by Julia Laport, it brings together urban dance, physical research and contemporary dramaturgy, placing the performer in the uncertain space between the darkness of grief and the possibility of a new beginning.
Suksen does not simply illustrate a tradition; it uses that tradition as material for new questions. Movement becomes physical memory and a way of holding on when words are no longer enough. The Vimianzo performance concludes a residency at Casa da Cultura running from 21 September to 3 October.
