Find out more about Museum of the Sea of Laxe

The Museum of the Sea of Laxe was conceived and financed within the extinct Plan for the Tourist Revitalization of the Costa de la Muerte. Its main objective was, at first, twofold: on the one hand, to conserve and restore a dilapidated property within the historic centre of Laxe and, on the other, to provide the town with a historical-cultural centre related to the sea that would contribute to strengthening the tourism sector. No other function was initially contemplated for the Museum.

The Museum of the Sea of Laxe is located in the building that housed the old barracks of the Civil Guard of the town, which was rehabilitated to house the museum. It is part of the historic center of the Villa de Laxe, and is located next to the “Casa del Arco”, and in which elements of a traditional house are still visible, such as the “Lareira”, the stone laundry room, and the latrine, among other elements.

It is not known with certainty what the exact date was when the current building was built but it must date back to the beginning or middle of the nineteenth century since, until the 70s of the twentieth century, the building continuously housed the Civil Guard Barracks of Laxe since the nineteenth century.

According to data collected from the cadastre’s electronic headquarters, the property has a constructed area of 424 m2, spread over four floors [ground floor, 1st floor and 2nd floor, and the floor under the roof].
