In October 2006, during the celebration of the 1st Congress of Ornithology of the Costa da Morte, the first bird observatory of this coast in the province of A Coruña was inaugurated. In this way, the town council of Cabana de Bergantiños wanted to recognize the more than thirty years that José Luís Rabuñal Patiño, one of the most important ornithologists in Spain, dedicated to the observation and study of birds in the Insua cove, naming it after him.
The José Luís Rabuñal Patiño Bird Viewpoint, a wooden hut perfectly integrated into the landscape, is located on Urixeira beach. Inside, informative panels were placed that inform about the migratory routes of the birds that arrive at the estuary, the spaces occupied by the birdlife in it, the rarities that could be observed on some occasion, how to recognize birds or the tools to observe them.
