Dombate: Testimony of Megalithism in Galicia
The Dolmen de Dombate Archaeological Centre, located in the place of Dombate in the parish of Borneiro, is an exceptional testimony of megalithism in Galicia. This archaeological complex is made up of two overlapping monuments: “Ancient Dombate”, which preserves the remains of a smaller dolmen dated before the main dolmen, and “Recent Dombate”, a complete corridor dolmen with a polygonal plan, built between 2,500 and 3,000 BC.
The recent dolmen of Dombate stands out for its tumulus of 24 meters in diameter and 1.8 meters in height, covered with a shell of stones that does not close the chamber. The burial chamber has seven slabs and a large upper lid, while the access corridor measures 4.1 meters and is made up of three sections, with an entrance closed by a slab. The vertical slabs inside display geometric paintings and engravings that reveal the artistic skill and cultural complexity of the prehistoric communities that inhabited the region.
