Find out more about Church of St George in Camariñas

The Church of St George (San Xurxo) in Camariñas is a must-see landmark of Galician Baroque in the Costa da Morte. Set right in the town centre, at Calle Real s/n (15123, Camariñas, A Coruña), its origins trace back to the patronage of Domingo Antonio Domínguez Canosa, a local emigrant in Mexico whose donation enabled the church to be built.

Dating from the 18th century, the building features a single nave with a wide transept covered by a groin vault, while the nave ends display barrel vaults. The main chapel also uses a groin vault and connects to a sacristy added in the 19th century. Its façade stands out for a sculptural central bay with broken pediments, plaques and stone mouldings, echoing the design language associated with Simón Rodríguez, a leading figure of Galician Baroque.

Inside, the church preserves a fine ensemble of Baroque and Neoclassical altarpieces. The highlight is the High Altarpiece of St George (1788–1798), Neoclassical in style with a sacramental layout, attributed to the workshop of Xosé Ferreiro, a disciple of Xosé Gambino. It’s an ideal stop for travellers interested in sacred art and cultural tourism in A Coruña.

Every 23 April, Camariñas honours its patron St George with a lively local celebration. When planning your Costa da Morte itinerary, pair your church visit with a stroll through the old town and the harbour to experience the authentic maritime spirit of Camariñas.
