Between Leis and O Lago beaches in Muxía stands Punta do Lago Lighthouse, a modest coastal navigation tower worth discovering. Unlike the towering landmarks elsewhere on the Costa da Morte, its appeal lies in its small scale and its quiet setting beside the Camariñas estuary.
Standing on a rocky headland, the lighthouse is a freestanding cylindrical tower built in granite masonry with a whitewashed finish. It has long served as a coastal navigation mark and still fulfils that purpose. The Galician regional government includes it in its catalogue of coastal cultural heritage, recognising the value of even the smallest maritime landmarks.
The surrounding shoreline brings together sandy beaches, granite rocks and views towards the mouth of the River Grande. Nearby Leis Beach, one of Muxía’s northernmost beaches, is a lovely place to enjoy the changing tides and light of this sheltered stretch of coast.
Visit the Punta do Lago area wearing suitable footwear and take care on slippery or exposed rocks. It makes a rewarding stop on a gentle exploration of Leis and O Lago beaches, always respecting coastal warnings and sea conditions.
