Praia de Area Maior in Malpica will host the 24th Barcanas and Sandcastle Competition on Friday, 21 August 2026, a summer event celebrating creativity on the beach and a long-standing local tradition.
Registration is available at the Education and Culture Department on the first floor of the Malpica Civic Centre, Rúa Ventorrillo s/n, telephone 981 707 104. Registration hours are 10:30 to 14:00 from 17 to 20 August, and from 10:00 to 10:30 on 21 August at Praia de Area Maior.
Each participant or group may submit one work only, and groups may include a maximum of 10 people.
The competition includes amateur, children’s and traditional barcana categories, plus a special public-choice prize. Six prizes will be awarded: three amateur prizes, the public-choice prize, best barcana and a children’s prize. The three amateur prizes include a trophy and vouchers worth €130, €70 and €50 respectively.
Works may only use sand and natural materials found on the beach. Tools such as shovels, buckets and water sprayers may be used, but they cannot form part of the finished work. Products used to compact or fix the sand are not permitted, except water. Creations must be made only within the marked areas of Praia de Area Maior between 10:30 and 13:00.
