Find out more about Church of Santa María de la Atalaya

A few kilometers from Malpica de Bergantiños we find Laxe, a small fishing village that is located within the Corme estuary, there on a small promontory above the port of the town is located the church of Santa María de la Atalaya or as the sign that precedes it says, Santa María da Atalaia.

We arrived in Laxe from Malpica avoiding the Corme estuary in Ponteceso, when we arrived in Laxe, the village seemed to us to be the quietest, people walking along the promenade from the beach to the port, there is where we discover the monumental church of Santa María de la Atalaya, it was built at the beginning of the thirteenth century, when it was built on a small promontory and some stone walls, the church served as a watchtower, controlled the bay where the port is located and the alarm was sounded by ringing the bells if an enemy tried to attack the port of Laxe, years later on the walls where the church is located, defensive cannons were arranged.
