ATLANTIC_SUNSET will promote sunset as an alternative economic resource to traditional tourism.

ATLANTIC_SUNSET pondrá en valor el atardecer como recurso económico alternativo al turismo tradicional

USC professors Ángel Miramontes, Jorge Mira and Rubén Lois coordinate this project that seeks to “take advantage not only of the natural beauty associated with the best and most particular sunsets in the Atlantic but also to identify and value the local endogenous resources associated with the sun”.

Promoting sunset contemplation as a unique, sustainable and inclusive form of tourism in the Atlantic Area is the basis of the ATLANTIC_SUNSET project, coordinated by USC professors Ángel Miramontes, Jorge Mira and Rubén Lois. The consortium, made up of eight institutions from four countries and led by the Fundación Centro de Estudios Eurorrexionais Galicia-Norte de Portugal (CEER), has just obtained more than one million euros in funding under the Interreg Atlantic Area 2021-2027 programme, which aims to support innovative initiatives that contribute to the growth of the Atlantic area through joint actions and the exchange of best practices. This is one of the five proposals for which the USC received funding under this call.

ATLANTIC_SUNSET is the first European project to be developed within the framework of this theme and constitutes a milestone in the sustainable tourism use of this resource outside the major European sunset destinations. In fact, the project, based on the experience of different leading research groups in the field of physics and geography, seeks “to take advantage not only of the natural beauty associated with the best and most particular sunsets in the Atlantic, but also to identify and enhance the local endogenous resources associated with the sun and which become a heritage attraction”, they explain.

The project constitutes a new opportunity for joint territorial development linked to the sunset and will serve to enhance the value of the Atlantic coast of Western Europe as a means of alternative economic development to traditional tourism, “considering temporal and spatial complementarity, inclusion and social innovation”, say those responsible for the project.

CMAT, together with other entities such as Turismo de Galicia, Innovation Norway (Visit Norway), INCITE-CSIC, Associação Nacional de Municípios Portugueses, Visit Cornwall, Mayo Dark Sky Park / Wild Nephin National Park, Technological University Dublin, Turismo de Porto e Norte and Cornwall Council, will support the project.

If you want to know more about the project, you can do it through the USC news.
