On Saturday 29 August 2026 at 11:00, the Centro Sociocomunitario de Caión hosts “Mares de plástico”, the second session in the environmental programme “O mar de Caión e o plástico: reflexións dende a praia”. The initiative aims to help the public understand the ocean more closely and to raise awareness of the impact plastic waste can have on marine and coastal ecosystems.
The workshop is designed for people aged 7 and over and invites participants to look beneath the surface of a world we often know only from the shoreline. Through questions, examples and accessible science communication, the session will explore why life underwater is so different from life on land, what kinds of landscapes lie beneath Galician waters and how some forms of human-made waste can remain in the sea for years.
One of the topics covered will be ghost fishing gear: lost or abandoned nets and other fishing equipment that may continue trapping marine animals long after they are no longer being actively used. The aim is not only to explain an environmental problem, but also to help participants understand marine ecosystems and encourage more responsible everyday attitudes towards the coast and the ocean.
“Mares de plástico” is part of an environmental awareness programme promoted by Concello da Laracha in collaboration with GALP Costa da Morte.
