Carballo brings the SolxCiencia series to a close with an inspiring event connecting space, climate history and locally rooted research. On Thursday, 13 August 2026 at 8:30 pm, Cafetería Baños Vellos hosts aerospace engineer Ana Cambón Periscal and researcher Uxía Fernández Pérez. Admission is free, subject to venue capacity.
What can a satellite tell us about Earth? And how can scientists discover what the climate was like hundreds or thousands of years ago, long before satellites or weather records existed? This session offers an engaging journey from present-day Earth observation to the reconstruction of past climates.
Ana Cambón, an aerospace engineer and mission controller for the European Sentinel-3 mission, will introduce the audience to the work behind one of the Copernicus programme satellites. She will explain how observations from space help measure land and sea-surface temperatures, monitor vegetation and oceans, and provide valuable data for understanding climate change, drought and natural-resource management.
Uxía Fernández, a researcher with GRICA-BIOpast at the University of A Coruña, will take the audience in the opposite direction: into the past. Lakes, sediments and other natural archives preserve clues that allow scientists to reconstruct temperatures, rainfall and environmental changes from long ago. This wider historical perspective is essential for understanding the transformations taking place today.
A welcoming chance to enjoy science in an informal setting, discover how researchers study our planet across very different timescales, and close SolxCiencia with one eye on the sky and the other on Earth’s memory.
The event is part of the science outreach programme promoted by the Department of Innovation through the Talento quilómetro cero (TALK 0) project, funded by the European Union.
