The Shipwreck of Laxe 2025 will take place on August 17, coinciding with the maritime procession of the Virgen do Carme, patron saint of sailors. After the solemn mass, the image will parade through the streets and harbor of the town, marking the start of the shipwreck reenactment — a tradition established in 1962 by sailor Avelino Lema Santos, who survived three shipwrecks during his lifetime.
In the reenactment, sailors simulate returning from fishing until their boat sinks, forcing them to swim to shore where the Virgin “rescues” them. Amid applause and emotion, they sing the “Salve Mariñeira” and complete the procession by carrying the image back to the church. One of the most unique celebrations of the Costa da Morte, blending faith, seafaring tradition, and visual spectacle.
