Find out more about Church of San Simón de Nande

Located in the place of Matío, in the parish of Nande (San Simón), municipality of Laxe (A Coruña), the Church of San Simón is an outstanding example of the religious heritage of the Costa da Morte. It is easily accessed from the AC-433 road (Laxe – Ponte do Porto), and is on the left in the direction of the town of Matío.

The temple has a hall structure with a nave and a rectangular main chapel. Its orientation is traditional: head to the east and façade to the west. The base of the church is in the late Gothic style, built at the end of the fifteenth century. The side chapels, added in the 16th century, maintain Gothic reminiscences, while the sacristy, built between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, stands out for its ribbed vault in a rural style. On the main façade there is a belfry from 1852.

Access to the interior is through a pointed triumphal arch that rests on solid buttresses, characteristic of Gothic architecture. This church represents a valuable testimony of the historical evolution of religious art in Galicia and is a point of cultural interest on any route through the municipality of Laxe and the Costa da Morte.
