Legend has it that the Virgin Mary met with the Apostle Santiago at Punta da Barca and told him that he should return to the Holy Land immediately. He also confessed that he would return to Galicia, but that he would do so after his death. In addition, the virgin used a stone boat to reach this point. To this day that boat appears torn to pieces in the area in stones such as the balar, the cadris or the rudder and this legend motivates one of the largest pilgrimages in Galicia, such as the Virxe da Barca that dates back to the eleventh century.
The “Romaría da Virxe da Barca” is celebrated on the second Sunday of September, unless it coincides with the 8th of the month, in this case it goes to the next one that coincides with the 15th.
