Galician cinema takes centre stage in Baio with one of the most acclaimed films of recent years. On Friday, 21 August 2026 at 10:00 pm, Praza Jorge Mira in Baio, Zas, will host an open-air screening of Sirat, directed by Oliver Laxe, as part of the Mestre Mateo Film Cycle and Zas Town Council’s summer programme.
In Sirat, Oliver Laxe takes audiences on an intense physical and emotional journey through the mountains of southern Morocco. A father and his son are searching for their daughter and sister, who disappeared months earlier at a rave. Their search leads them to follow a group of ravers heading towards one last party in the desert, pushing the journey into increasingly unpredictable territory.
The film won the Jury Prize ex aequo at the Festival de Cannes and, after representing Spain in the Oscar race, went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film in 2026. Its remarkable international journey has helped establish Sirat as one of the standout works in contemporary Galician cinema.
Watching Sirat outdoors in Baio adds something special to the experience: a summer night, an open square and a film designed to be felt as much as watched. The Mestre Mateo Film Cycle, supported by the Deputación da Coruña and Zas Town Council, brings Galician audiovisual culture closer to audiences in welcoming public spaces.
