Ponteceso is turning its eyes to the sky with a special programme built around the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. Faro Roncudo, in Corme-Porto, will be one of the standout places to experience this astronomical event on the Costa da Morte, with solar observing, science outreach and photography activities.
Totality is expected at around 8:28 pm. From Faro Roncudo the Sun will be very low above the horizon, at roughly 12°, towards the west-northwest, making this open Atlantic viewpoint a particularly attractive location for the eclipse. According to the organisers, totality at this spot will last approximately 24 seconds.
Looking at the Sun requires certified eclipse glasses compliant with ISO 12312-2. Ordinary sunglasses, X-ray film, smoked glass and homemade filters are not safe. Binoculars, cameras and telescopes must only be pointed at the Sun when fitted with suitable solar filters correctly mounted in front of the objective.
Ponteceso Council set up a reservation system for certified eclipse glasses. The extended registration period ended on Monday 10 August at 2:00 pm, while supplies lasted. For information, contact the Culture department on 630 907 124 or the Cultural Centre on 981 715 442.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, check the weather forecast, respect access routes and private property, and take care of the natural surroundings. Roncudo is ready for a memorable evening where science, ocean and sky meet on the Costa da Morte.
