The 135th anniversary of the HMS Serpent shipwreck in Camariñas is a heartfelt invitation to remember our Atlantic past. The council has curated a cultural route through emblematic sites —Vilán Lighthouse, the English Cemetery, the Man of Camelle Museum, and the Casa de Pedra— to honour the victims and understand why this tragedy shaped Costa da Morte’s identity. Memory, culture, and community, all in one program.
Events begin on Sunday, 9 November at 20:00 at Vilán Lighthouse with the theatre piece “Naufraxios”. On Monday, 10 November at 12:00, a floral tribute at the English Cemetery will honour the sailors of the HMS Serpent; and at 13:00, the “Serpent” exhibition opens at the Man of Camelle Museum, running 10 November–15 December.
To conclude, the Casa de Pedra will host “Prestige” from 1–15 December, drawing a line between the Serpent (1890) and the 2002 disaster. If you value a human, down-to-earth approach to heritage, this 135th anniversary of the HMS Serpent shipwreck in Camariñas is your chance to remember, learn, and celebrate maritime culture.
