Built around the middle of the eighteenth century, approximately 1755, it has a Latin-cross plan, a single nave and a slender bell tower divided into four stages. On the main façade, look for two distinctive details: the richly decorated niche containing a stone image of Saint Mammes and the sundial to its right.

Inside, a groin vault covers the crossing, where four arches open towards the different arms of the church. The pulpits, high wooden choir gallery and side altar niches help reveal how the space was arranged. The artistic highlight is the Neoclassical high altarpiece, commissioned in 1774 and made by sculptors José Ferreiro and José Gambino. Our Lady of the Rosary occupies the central position, with Saint Mammes above her and other saints completing the ensemble.

San Mamede rewards an unhurried visit: study the façade first, then, if the church is open, look at how the interior unfolds beneath its vaults. It is a chance to appreciate the stonemasons and sculptors who shaped Carnota’s religious heritage. The church reveals another side of the Costa da Morte, where rural parishes preserve works of genuine artistic interest without the fame of the region’s most photographed landmarks.

Discover San Mamede de Carnota Church and the religious heritage of Carnota on the Costa da Morte.

[322
248
post-88536","contenido","type-contenido","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","concellos-contenido-carnota-en","categorias-contenido-arquitectura-religiosa-en
["GET
