The rebuilding was led by parish priest Manuel Pose Pérez, who advanced his own money alongside contributions from parishioners. An inscription dated 1903 on the façade records that shared effort, making the exterior itself the first clue to the church’s history.

The new building was designed with a broad nave, side chapels and a chancel with a sacristy, beneath a barrel vault. Altarpieces from the former church were installed inside. The main Baroque altarpiece dates from the 1760s and features characteristic decorative supports; it is attributed to the workshop of Antonio de Meis, although no surviving document confirms its authorship. Its sculptures include Saint Pelagius, Saint Lucy, Saint Blaise and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The side chapels contain further altarpieces in a Neoclassical tradition.

If you have the chance to go inside, look for a revealing detail: the older altarpieces were too small for the new walls, so painted draperies were added behind them to help them fit the space visually. It neatly sums up the character of San Paio, a church rebuilt without discarding its artistic memory. This is a rewarding stop in Coristanco for anyone interested in how local communities preserved their heritage through periods of change.

Discover San Paio de Coristanco Church and the religious heritage of Coristanco on the Costa da Morte.

[314
248
post-88518","contenido","type-contenido","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","concellos-contenido-coristanco-en","categorias-contenido-arquitectura-religiosa-en
["GET
